Mission

L.E.A.R.N. works to develop a college going culture by increasing
access to postsecondary education for all underserved students in the
greater areas of unincorporated Whittier, Pico Rivera, and El Monte.

History

Begun in 2004, L.E.A.R.N. was conceived and developed to assist
underserved schools in the communities of unincorporated Whittier,
Pico Rivera and El Monte and portions of unincorporated Los Angeles
County. The founders were three local residents who work to provide
similar resources to schools in East Los Angeles through their positions
at Cal State Los Angeles. Their concern for the local community led
them to compile data that now forms the geographical focus of the
organization's efforts.
Objective

The objective of the organization is to seek funding and bring together
key community resources to encourage creative learning, academic
rigor and parental and community involvement in an effort to develop a
college going culture for students in underserved communities. This
effort will begin in middle school and follow students on into high
school, providing the following resources and services:
Goal#1: Student Support Services

These services include in-class and after school tutoring, test taking
workshops, career and college exploration, individual academic
advisement, summer and Saturday programming, mentoring, field
trips to local colleges and universities, and counseling services.

Goal #2: Parental Services

These services include parent education workshops to assist
parents with parenting issues and how best to assist their children
with school assignments and academic success. In addition, parent
services will focus on increasing parent involvement and support of
the ideals of developing a college going culture for their children.
Services include home visits and educational field trips to local
colleges and universities.
Goal #3: Faculty Support

These services include facilitation for faculty around developing a
self-assessment of their school based on data of student
academic performances and an evaluation of resources currently
offered at their school site. A common direction will be sought
whereby needs determined by the faculty as a whole will be
identified and addressed through a cohesive plan of action.
Services include providing for faculty professional development.

Goal #4: Community Involvement

These services will include the identification and development of
community resources to support and sustain the efforts created by
the organization. This involvement will include the development of a
community board, represented by local business and community
organizations to assist in the overall objective of developing a
college going culture of underserved students.
